Captree State Park Playground

Captree playground Captree State Park on the coast of the Great South Bay in Babylon is home to a small but creative playground right on the waterfront.

Captree playground

The playground at Captree State is a bit of a hidden gem: at any time other than winter it's practically invisible from the parking lot. It's on the north end of the park, towards the charter boats and the restaurant. Your best bet is to park as far east in the lot as possible -- there is a short trail that takes you right into the playground. The nautical theme of the park is exemplified by the tugboat sandbox above. Kids can climb to the top for a great view of the boats on the bay or play in the sand in the rear of the boat.

The small child playset features three slides, including this double slider for a good race. There are two climbing panels that have been mounted sideways for decorative purposes, a nice innovation. There are three levels, another climbing panel that has been mounted on a slight incline to facilitate young climbers, a ball spinner and a tic-tac-toe board.

The bigger kid playset is a multi-level area that can be accessed by two challenging bridges or just a plain old set of stairs. There is another set of double slides on one side and a corkscrew slider on the other side. This is mostly a climbing set -- there are no games built in.

The play surface is mostly sand, with composite slabs under the playsets. Landings are extra soft at the Captree State Park playground. The light color prevents the surface from getting too hot, but not so much as to create any annoying glare.

The swings at Captree are a bit limited -- toddler swings only. There was a frame for a second set when we visited, so maybe some upgrades are coming. These toddler swings were older models with bare chains, but still in good condition.

Just beyond the playground is a large boardwalk that is popular with fishers. It's a nice spot to take a walk and get a better look at the passing boats and the Fire Island lighthouse.

The playground at Captree State Park is worth a visit, particularly if you plan on stopping at the picnic area on the south side of the park. NYS parking fees apply during the high season -- between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 6:00 p.m. on the weekends. Empire passes are honored at Captree. The restaurant and fishing supply store offer snacks and public restrooms.
