Blydenburgh County Park

Blydenburgh County Park Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown provides large camping and picnic areas, rowboat rentals and a small playground in a surprisingly quiet setting just off of Vet's Highway.

The playset at Blydenburgh County Park can be found in the large picnic area marked 'Fields 1-6' just past the entrance to the rowboat rentals. There is a parking area marked when you first enter Blydenburgh, but this is only for the park offices. It's a long walk to get to the the playground. It is, however, a nice drive. A narrow and winding road takes you through a densely wooded area until you come upon the parking area.

The single playset is located at the far northeast end of the parking area. The lot is unpaved and unmarked. While all connected to a series of multilevel platforms, the playset at Blydenburgh offers two distinct sections for younger and older kids. The older section offers a number of climbing opportunities and two steep slides. There is also a rotating treadmill, for burning out that excess kid energy.

The smaller child area features a low slide and a few levels that are easily accessible by one or two steps. A short slide and a hang glider connect to a chain bridge and curved ladder. The play surface at Blydenburgh is wood mulch on top of sand. There are no swings here. There are public bathrooms, although they're a bit far from the playground. The area is fenced in from the parking lot, and there is a lot of grass to play on. There's a pretty rustic horseshoe pitching court adjacent to the playground.

An improperly installed math spinner provides some comic relief at Blydenburgh.

Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown is open every day from sunrise to sunset. If you like to explore, you can rent a boat and set out on Stump pond to do some fishing or just rowing around. There is also an historic trust area on the northern end of the park, with some vintage farm buildings and a grist mill. Blydenburgh is a very nice spot for a picnic and some exploring, but the playground won't keep kids occupied for too long. A Suffolk County Green Key is required to enter from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and this is one of the park offices where you can purchase one.
