Jones Beach State Park
|Jones Beach State Park is the crown jewel of Long Island's public ocean beaches. With multiple public bath houses, a swimming pool, refreshments and a great playground, there's a lot more than just the marquee white sandy beach to explore.|
The newly refurbished playground at Jones Beach State Park equals its great location with an extensive playset that features many climbing levels and slides. The colorful palate looks great against a summer blue sky, and there's enough room to play on even the busiest of days. For the parents, there's a pair of gazebos to hide out in the shade.
The smaller of the two sets boasts this great trio of colorful slides. They're steep and fast, and the platform that they descend from is large and easily accessible. There are a number of built-in games at the top, as well as a second set of double slides. Kids can climb to the top on standard stair and platform groups, or they can work their way up via a challenging wire stair climb.
The larger set has a music theme, exemplified by this creative band playset. There are drums, a whistle pump, microphone and other whimsical percussive instruments built right in. If you're there late in the afternoon during the concert season, you can usually hear the bands performing sound checks over at the Jones Beach Theater. The play surface throughout the area is a soft composite that is surrounded by sand. There are many benches in the area and some sandy spots for those siblings who object to being torn away from the beach.
The large set has so many elements that it's hard to cover them all. There's a tunnel built on an angle so that it doubles as a slide, there's a rock wall to climb up onto a platform intersection, there are built-in games throughout the set and separate climbing walls along the outside. There's even a firetruck tucked into the middle. It's a very well-designed set that encourages and rewards exploration.
On the east end of the large set is an area made for smaller children. It has a pair of short slides and easy steps. It does, however, connect to the rest of the playset, and most kids will be attracted to the bigger (and more colorful) slides.
The nearby bandshell plays host to concerts all summer, many of them geared to kids. Other amenities include many large public restrooms and changing areas, showers, chair and umbrella rental for the beach, refreshment stands with food and drinks (and iced cream!), miniature and par-3 golf courses, shuffleboard, tennis, basketball, beach volleyball courts... the list goes on. In short, Jones beach is a great spot for kids and adults.
