Hither Hills State Park

Hither Hills State Park Hither Hills State Park in Montauk is the home of a nice little playground, right on the shore of one of the world's best beaches.

Hither Hills State Park
Hither Hills State Park is located at the west end of Montauk, at the end of the Napeague stretch. This is one of Long Island's most popular camping destinations, so it's always crowded during the summertime. There is a large paved parking lot right next to the playground, and New York State parking fees apply during the high season. This lot often fills up, so there is another one primarily for beach access just a few hundred yards east of the main entrance on old Montauk Highway.

There are two mid-sized playsets at Hither Hills. The first is intended for smaller children, with easy climbs and a short paired slide. The covered pavilions are a must on those hot summer days at the beach, although this playgrounds proximity to the water means that there's usually a cool breeze blowing through. A mild corkscrew slide leads to a soft sandy landing.

The smaller set also features a curved tunnel to climb through and a short climbing slide. The play surface here is a soft composite in a pale yellow color that blends right in with the sand. You hardly notice that the artificial surface is there until you're standing on it, which preserves the natural beauty of the beach setting. This is some very soft, authentic beach sand and it's a pleasure to walk and play on. Unfortunately, the pair of earth mover toys were not in working order during our visit.

A climbing platform presents a bigger challenge to older kids. Rock climbs on either side lead up to an elevated platform where older (read-taller) kids can get a view of the ocean beyond the dunes. There is also a wire ladder to the top, for those kids who are not quite up to a rock climb. This area is also home to one of those spinners where you hold onto a bar and run, as on a log roll.

The larger play set at Hither Hills features a nice combination of climbs and steep slides. A wire ladder and wall climb are among the pathways to get up on to the main platform that all the slides radiate from. This platform is shaded by overhead canopies, and there is play space underneath with sand and built-in games. This set is also located on top of a composite surface.

A tall double slide is an excellent spot for racing. Just beyond this set is the General Store, where there are public restrooms and refreshments. This is actually the main supply store for the campers at Hither Hills, so you'll find lots of pre-packaged foods as well as snacks that are cooked to order. It's also a good bet if you've forgotten to bring enough towels or sunscreen.

There are two swingsets at Hither Hills. One set has four standard swings and the second set has two standard and two toddler swings. The chains are bare, but the swings and the sets are in good condition. You'll also find two poles equipped for that traditional beach favorite, tetherball.

Of course, the real attraction at Hither Hills is just over the dunes beyond the playground. This is a terrific ocean beach, with an endless strip of soft white sand. The water was nearly a Caribbean-blue during our visit, and the waves are often a moderate height with a long roll that makes this a favorite spot for surfers.

Hither Hills State Park is open year-round, and the beaches are open for swimming during the summer season. Campsites are available (available being a relative term, they book up way in advance) from April until November. Empire Passports are honored for parking here. Surf fishing is popular here year-round.
