Otsego Park

Otsego Park Otsego Park is a sprawling athletic complex with multiple baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, a firemans memorial park and a nice playground.

Otsego Park
Otsego Park in Commack is located off of Route 4, Commack Road just south of the Long Island Expressway. The parking at Otsego is large and paved, with well-marked spots. It is a bit of a walk to get to the playground from the parking lot, but there is a pathway that takes you there past the fireman''s memorial and the tennis complex. On a nice day, the green grass of the baseball fields seem to go on forever.

The main playset is designed very well for small children. There are a number of low access points with wide stairs and three short slides. The short slide pavilion is joined to a second one with a racecar theme that features ramp access, making the whole area handicapped-friendly.

There's plenty of fun for older kids as well, with four large, steep slides and some moderately challenging climbs. The covered slide here has as many twists and turns as a water slide, and there is a paired wavy slide that is perfect for racing. The play surface at Otsego is a soft sand, so landings are a breeze.

There is a pair of tire swings, which were in very good shape during our visit. The chains are coated and they're spaced well enough to provide for safe swinging in any direction. Some anchored rockers with an animal theme are scattered about as well. The whole area is fenced and gated, so kids can be left to explore.

There was one hazard during our visit: a chain bridge had come loose. It was closed off and well-marked with hazard tape and caution cones. Fortunately we don't see this very often -- it's hard to keep kids away and most towns are good about making repairs quickly. For the moment, it may actually keep smaller kids from finding themselves at the top of one of the very steep slides.

There are a number of built-in games throughout the playset, this spinning rock-paper-scissors game is a unique feature. There is one swingset, with two toddler swings and four standard swings. Public restrooms are available at Otsego, adjacent to the parking area. These were closed during our midday visit, they're probably open later in the day when the many athletic fields are in use.

Otsego Park is very large, and boasts some terrific athletic facilities. There is plenty of room to roam, and the playground is well-designed and in very good shape. Despite its proximity to the busy Route 4 and the Long Island Expressway, it's actually very quiet when there aren't any games going on.
