The Weekend Planner, November 7th

Most of the weekend events move indoors as we welcome the cool air of November to Long Island. Of course, this also means fewer things to do, but there are still some activities around if you know where to look.

The circus is in town this weekend, as Cirque Le Masque presents Carnivale at the Tilles Center in Brookville on Friday and Saturday. If you can't get enough clowns and acrobats and feel like taking a trip, the Big Apple Circus is also in full swing at Lincoln Center.

If you're feeling like you want to squeeze one more wearing out of those Halloween costumes, the Variety Child Learning Center in Syosset is hosting an After Halloween Bash on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. There will be entertainment, snacks and outdoor play (weather permitting). Admission is $6.

There are a trio of nature activities this weekend, some will even lead you outside. The Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach is hosting a make-your-own-birdfeeder workshop on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Admission is $3 and registration is required. The Red House Nature Center in Greenport is presenting a closer look at food chains and how they impact the lives of animals native to Long Island. That starts at 11:00 a.m. and costs $5 for non-members. Finally, on Sunday there's a family scavenger hunt at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Starting at 10:30 a.m., kids can pick up a list of things to find at the preserve. Admission is $3, $2 for children over three plus parking.

Sunday also brings the Friends Around the World Festival to the Long Island Children's Museum. There will be international foods, games and music for kids to enjoy throughout the day. Tickets are required for members and nonmembers alike.

Tuesday is Veteran's Day, and if you're looking for a parade to take the kids to you have a number of options. Port Washington is holding a parade that starts at Sunset Park at 11:00 a.m. In New Hyde Park, the festivities kick off at 10:45 a.m. at Village Hall. In Babylon, the parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at the American Legion Hall. Finally, out in Sag Harbor, a parade begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs down Main Street and onto Bay Street.
