2008 Menorah Lightings

All of the Christmas trees on Long Island are now lit, so it's time to look ahead to the Festival of Lights, beginning on December 21st. Of course, there are a few spots where they're getting an early start...

December 15
East Meadow 5:45 p.m.
Menorah lighting at Temple Emanu-El, 123 Merrick Avenue.

December 18
Jericho 8:00 p.m.
Menorah lighting and holiday grab bag at the Jericho Jewish Center, 430 North Broadway.

December 19
Elmont 7:30 p.m.
Holiday menorah lighting at Temple B'nai Israel, 471 Elmont Road.

December 21
Babylon 6:00 p.m.
Congregation Beth Sholom presents their annual menorah lighting and Hanukkah celebration at 441 Deer Park Avenue.

Bayport 5:30 p.m.
Menorah lighting at the south end of Nichols Road and Montauk Highway.

East Hills 5:00 p.m.
Giant outdoor menorah lighting at Sid Jacobson JCC, 300 Forest Dr.

Farmingville 6:00 p.m.
Music and menorah lighting at Brookhaven Town Hall.

Garden City 3:00 p.m.
The Long Island Children's Museum is hosting a special day about the Festival of Lights, where kids can decorate and keep their own menorahs and dreidels. $3 with museum admission.

Hauppauge 11:30 a.m.
Menorah lighting, music and snacks at Temple Beth Chai, 870 Townline Road.

Hempstead 2:00 p.m.
Music and menorah lighting at Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Avenue. $5 admission includes dessert and coffee.

Holbrook 6:30 p.m.
B'nai Israel Reform Temple presents hot coca and children's gifts for the menorah lighting on Main Street.

Merrick 1:45 p.m.
Starting at 1:45, a horse-drawn wagon will depart the Merrick Road Park Clubhouse (2550 Merrick Road) every 15 minutes for a ride through Merrick. At 4:00 p.m. a parade marches from the clubhouse to Cammans Pond Park for the menorah lighting. Wagon rides are $6 per person.

Mount Sinai 4:00 p.m.
Temple Beth Emeth sponsors music and the debut of a new menorah, at North Shore Heritage Park on the intersection of County Road 83 and Route 25A.

Nesconset 4:00 p.m.
Menorah lighting at Nesconset Plaza on Smithtown Boulevard.

Oakdale 7:30 p.m.
Menorah lighting at the Oakdale train station on Montauk Highway.

Patchogue 6:00 p.m.
Community menorah lighting at Capital One Plaza on Main Street.

And don't forget -- the Old Bethpage Village Restoration starts their Candlelit Evenings on December 20th. Running through December 30th, the village is open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for lantern-lit strolls and traditional holiday music and dancing. Admission is $10, and they're closed the evenings of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
